Sacramento, CA – The USA Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships are scheduled to be held in Sacramento, CA July 22-28 and a number of Grady athletes have made the trip to the West Coast. The meet will be held at Hornet Stadium on the campus of Sacramento State University.
Jackson Sexton and Fred Hamilton will both be competing in the 15-16 age group. They run with Atlanta Lightspeed Track Club in the summer.
Sexton qualified in the 400m, 400m hurdles, 4 x 100m, and 4 x 400m. Last season for Grady he won the region in the 400m, finished second in the 300m hurdles, and qualified for state in both events. He was also a member of the region-winning 4 x 100m relay team.
Hamilton will be joining Jackson in the 400m hurdles and 4 x 400m in addition to qualifying in the 4 x 800m and as an alternate in the 4 x 100m. During the season for Grady he finished fourth in the region in the 300m hurdles, advanced to the sectional meet, and was an alternate member of the 4 x 100m team.
In the 17-18 age group, DeKairi Brown and Asiani Blackman qualified for the 4 x 100m relay. Blackman will be a senior this year and also runs with Atlanta Lightspeed Track Club in the summer.
Brown, who runs with Sprint Athletics in the summer, also qualified for the long jump, high jump, and 4 x 100m. He graduated from Grady in the spring and earned a scholarship to High Point University. As a senior for Grady, he won region in the long jump and high jump, finished second in the triple jump, and was a member of the 4 x 100m team.
“The most valuable thing these athletes will take away from competing in a national meet is championship experience at the highest level,” said Grady Boys Track Head Coach Delbert Ellerton. “The returning athletes will come back with improved skills and, most importantly, more confidence for next season.”
